High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
We recognise that every child has unique strengths and learns in their own way. From Kindergarten to Year 6, our teachers design inclusive learning environments where all students are supported and extended to reach their potential.
Understanding individual strengths and needs
Teachers regularly observe and assess students’ skills, interests and learning behaviours. This helps us understand where each child excels or may need additional support, allowing us to shape lessons that stretch thinking, deepen understanding and encourage curiosity.
Flexible grouping and targeted instruction
Students work in a variety of groupings depending on the learning purpose - sometimes with like-minded peers, sometimes in mixed-ability groups for collaboration. This flexibility allows for targeted support or extension and creates opportunities for rich discussion and higher-order thinking.
Personalised learning pathways
Where appropriate, students engage with personalised goals or extension tasks that match their readiness. These pathways allow learners to progress at a pace that challenges them, building confidence, independence and a strong sense of ownership over their learning.
Engaging and varied teaching strategies
Teachers use a wide range of approaches to keep learning purposeful and stimulating. Inquiry tasks, problem-solving activities, creative projects and opportunities for deeper research are woven into daily lessons. This encourages students to think critically and extend their understanding in meaningful ways.
High expectations and meaningful feedback
Teachers explicitly communicate high expectations by designing learning objectives that promote higher-order thinking, creativity and problem-solving. Students receive timely, specific feedback that helps them reflect on their progress, set personal goals and build resilience, motivation and a strong growth mindset.
Student leadership and voice
Students are encouraged to take the lead within the classroom, contributing ideas, guiding discussions or taking on project roles that align with their interests and strengths. This fosters ownership, confidence and leadership skills while helping students recognise and develop their own potential.
Ongoing professional learning and collaboration
Our teachers engage in regular professional learning to deepen their understanding of how to support high potential and gifted learners. Staff collaborate to share effective strategies, analyse student data and design differentiated units of work, ensuring that all students benefit from high-quality instruction and consistent opportunities for talent development.
By embedding enrichment, high expectations and differentiated practice across all learning areas, we ensure that high potential learners are supported to thrive.
Our school offers a wide variety of enriching programs and extracurricular activities to celebrate and develop each child’s strengths beyond the classroom.

Celebrating our Students
Senior Girls Relay team
Congratulations to our Senior Girls relay team who represented our school at the NSWPSSA Primary Athletics Championship in Week 1. The students had a great day, competing against very strong competition. It is an amazing achievement to reach this level, and we congratulate Megan, Isla, Sara, and Isobel for their wonderful effort and success.
Isla M
Congratulations to Isla M for her impressive performance at the recent National Clubs Gymnastics Competition held on the Gold Coast at the end of last term. Competing at Level 7, Isla and her team achieved an outstanding third place overall in their division, ranking among 18 teams!
Isla’s dedication is truly remarkable, training 14 hours a week throughout the year to hone her skills and excel in this demanding sport. While gymnastics is not a school sport, we are proud to celebrate her fantastic achievement and commitment.
Well done, Isla! Keep reaching for the stars.
Coding
Congratulations to Zander R who recently competed in a statewide coding competition organised by an independent STEM education company called Stemlook. This is an extracurricular activity that Zandar does every Thursday evening in Chatswood.
The competition theme was Environmental Care. Students had to conceive, design and build a robot that helps the environment, program it using the Rogic software and create a short video case study to showcase their idea.
Zandar was awarded first place for his Planter Bot and presented with his certificate by Tanya Taylor the Mayor of Willoughby Council.
The robots of the top-winning students were also showcased at the Australian Museum for Science Week 2025.
Congratulations Zandar - what a huge achievement!
Sydney North Touch Football
Congratulations to Blythe and Claire, who recently competed for the Sydney North Touch Football team in Dubbo. Their team performed exceptionally well, playing over several days and winning the final against Hunter.
Blythe has played since she was 9 and plays for Manly. She also enjoys basketball, swimming, running and soccer. Her goal is to keep playing to enhance her skills and play with friends. She would like to continue achieving placement in representative teams and one day play for NSW.
Claire is also an exceptionally talented athlete and recently played for Sydney North in the netball competition at Coffs Harbour, where the team placed fourth. Claire has played netball for several years, representing Collaroy Plateau at club level and Manly at representative level. She excels in many sports, including soccer and athletics, and dedicates numerous hours each week to training and playing. Her goal is to one day play for the NSW Swifts netball team.
Sunny was also a member of the Sydney North Netball team, playing alongside Claire. Sunny has played netball since she was young and competes at both club and representative levels. She plays Goal Attack and Goal Shooter, with the aim of becoming the best shooter she can be. Sunny divides her time between touch football, netball and soccer, but netball is her favourite sport.
What amazing athletes we have here at Allambie Heights Public School!
