Stories and highlights
There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.
A year at our school
Remembrance Day Ceremony
Last Thursday we held our Remembrance Day ceremony with all of the students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in attendance. Our Captains did a magnificent job presenting a moving tribute to reflect on the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces. Our students showed the utmost respect through their calm, quiet, and thoughtful behaviour, reflecting the true spirit of this important occasion.
Colour Run
Thank you to our Year 6 students and their teachers for an awesome 2025 Colour Run…we were all certainly covered in colour and slime!!!
Coding Club Showcase
On Friday, our Coding Club students showcased their work to our K–6 students and their parents and carers. Who knew you could play the bongos with water?! These highly engaged students have thoroughly enjoyed their lunchtime sessions, where they learned many exciting aspects of coding.
A big thank you to Mrs Elliott and the supporting staff for providing this amazing opportunity for our students—it is greatly appreciated!
The Forest High Enrichment – Year 5
The Forest High School Enrichment program was successfully completed by five Year 5 students last Wednesday. These students joined other Year 5 students from local primary schools and spent a day a week at TFHS being immersed in a cross-curriculum program that allowed them to access many of the resources available in high schools. Thank you to Mrs Kabalan and family members who attended the presentation of the program - the standard of work completed and presented by the students involved in the program was fantastic.
P&C Working Bee
We were thrilled to wake up on Sunday morning to clearer skies—just in time for our first working bee of 2025! With the rain finally holding off, a wonderful group of volunteers rolled up their sleeves and dived straight into weeding, mulching, and freshening up the discovery trail and front gardens. Thanks to their hard work, our school grounds are looking so much better! A huge thank you to all the parents and students who came out to lend a hand—you made all the difference. And a special shout-out to Hannah and Richard for coordinating the day. What an incredible team effort to finish off the year!
Year 5 DanceSport Gala Evening
On Wednesday 27 August 2025, our Year 5 students performed at the DanceSport Gala Evening, held in the Quay Centre at Homebush. Parents, carers, friends and staff who attended were blown away by the talent on the dance floor. Not only the talent of the students from our school but the talent from the other schools present, as they danced away to the Jive, Cha Cha, Tango and Salsa. Thank you to Mrs Woods and Mrs Kabalan who coordinated our 2025 program with Mr Gordon Gilkes from DanceSport. A huge thank you to all the students who attended the Homebush event… Your enthusiasm, support of each other and exemplary behaviour was a credit to you all and had me beaming with pride to be the Principal of our school.
Stage 1 Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens excursion
Sunshine, laughter and discovery filled the air as 111 eager Stage 1 students set off on an unforgettable adventure at the Royal Botanic Gardens! From the moment they stepped into this living classroom, the wonders of nature and culture sparked their curiosity and excitement.
On Monday 1 September 2025, the gardens became a vibrant space of learning and fun. After a picnic recess, Scott introduced us to our First Nations culture, teaching the children about traditional food sources and our special connection to the land. Students learnt how to make a three-pronged spear from a grass tree, used for hunting fish. They practised moving like kangaroos, emus, goannas and wombats and learnt how these animals were traditionally hunted. They also discovered how nature communicates with us—like spotting blue bottles when the northerly wind blows or knowing humpback whales will soon give birth when the wattle blooms.
With Yarin, the students explored the bush, discovering how to make weapons and shelters using natural materials like branches, large leaves and animal skins. They pondered why shelters might be built then left after a week and met native Sydney bees, which don’t sting and produce sweet honey!
Elise and Aimee guided the children through different plant habitats—from hot, dry cactus areas to shady rainforests and the cool indoor fernery. The kids even made seed bombs in the greenhouse by mixing clay, soil and seeds, and tasted various edible parts of plants, including roots, stems, fruits, flowers and leaves.
What a fabulous day of learning, movement and connection with nature! Our Stage 1 explorers returned buzzing with excitement and a deeper appreciation for the incredible world around them.
Book Week
What a fabulous week we had celebrating Book Week! The rain didn’t dampen our spirits or involvement in the fantastic activities organised throughout the week. Unfortunately, the costume parade was cancelled due to the adverse weather, but that didn’t affect our students’ enthusiasm. We saw so much creativity in the costumes. Our library monitors had a difficult time awarding the most creative costume to the K-2 and 3-6 students. After much deliberation, these awards were presented to Mac (K-2) and Arlo (3-6). Mac was the Mopoke and Arlo was the snail from The Snail and The Whale. A special thank you to Mrs Buncombe and Mrs Hagan, who put many hours into organising this week for our students.
Education Week 2025
A huge thank you to the many parents, carers, grandparents and friends who joined us for our Education Week Open Day on Tuesday 5 August 2025. The sun was shining and it was a fabulous day to celebrate public education with the whole community. A huge thank you to our wonderful teaching staff who created and arranged the art show. Open classrooms were a huge success as we welcomed parents, relatives and friends into all classes as partners in learning. This year’s Education Week theme was ‘Ignite Your Potential' and I certainly feel it was a wonderful opportunity for our students to highlight their talents and potential.
Kindergarten Field of Mars Excursion
On Monday 28 July 2025, Kindergarten went on an exciting excursion to the Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre for a teddy bears’ picnic. This excursion focussed on the needs of living things – air, water, shelter and food. Students participated in a number of activities, including habitat games, story time, a bush walk and an amazing picnic with their teddies.

Meanwhile, Year 2 is gearing up for a beloved classic, Old MacDonald Had a Farm as they learn new notes low E and low D. We can’t wait to add our own musical flair to those animal sounds!
Reminder for All Stage 1 Students: Please continue to bring your labelled recorders to every music lesson throughout Term 3. Thank you!
Keep up the wonderful musical effort, everyone.
AHPS Night of Performing Arts
Congratulations to all our rising stars and to the teams who created a fantastic evening! Highlights included performances by the Concert, Jazz, Performance and Training Bands, Junior and Senior Dance groups, the Allambie Singers, Senior Choir, Recorder Ensemble and even a touch of drama with improvised skits by MCs James and Eli. A huge shout-out to the amazing AHPS Tech Team for the lighting and sound, to our supportive staff and families who made the night possible.
NAIDOC Week
This week, AHPS will be celebrating NAIDOC week with several events and learning experiences happening throughout the week. Classes will be discussing the meaning of this year's NADIOC Week theme - "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy". Thank you to our Aboriginal Education Team for coordinating the week and to all staff for their ongoing commitment to facilitating student learning about Aboriginal history and culture.
Sydney North Dance Festival
Congratulations to our Junior and Senior Dance groups for their remarkable performances at the Sydney North Dance Festival last week. Their talent and dedication truly shone through, with every dancer representing our school with pride and exemplary behaviour. A special thank you to Mrs Dewey and Miss Vanessa for the countless hours you dedicated to our groups.
Kaboom Percussion Incursion
After a three-year wait, Kaboom Percussion finally made their way to AHPS last Tuesday, delivering an unforgettable and highly engaging performance for all K–6 students. The dynamic duo, Aidan and Laura, presented a unique, educational, and interactive show that had students clapping, stomping, and singing along through body percussion and voice. A few of our talented student musicians even had the chance to join the performers on stage, becoming part of the main act.
Students were captivated by the inventive instruments crafted from everyday objects— ranging from a piano made of 32 tuned squeaky toys, to 3D-printed drums and creative bucket drumming. The show was not only entertaining but also taught students a valuable lesson: with imagination, even the simplest object can make incredible music. Definitely worth the wait!!!
Keep up the amazing musical effort everyone and happy rehearsing to all our choirists and musicians.
Stage 3 visit Canberra
In Week 6, our Stage 3 students and teachers headed off to Canberra for three days and two nights. It was a jam-packed three days, and by all accounts, the students had a wonderful time, with some of the highlights being the visits to the War Memorial, The Mint, as well as Questacon. A huge thank you to the staff for providing this memorable opportunity for our students.
Election Day BBQ & Bake Sale
A huge thank you to everyone who supported our school Election Day BBQ and bake sale! We are thrilled to share that it was a great success, with everything selling out before the end of the day.
We would like to extend a special shout out to all the families who generously donated baked goods or volunteered their time on the day. Your contributions made a significant difference, and we are truly grateful for your support.
We would also like to acknowledge our amazing community sponsors and patrons for their continued encouragement.
This event was expertly organised and coordinated by Shelley Kemp and her dedicated team of volunteers. We appreciate all their hard work in making this event a success!
Walk Safely to School Day
Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event in Australia in which primary school children are encouraged to walk or commute safely to school, an initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. On Friday, many students and their families along with some of the staff from Allambie Heights PS, participated in Walk Safely to School Day. There were many happy faces upon arriving to school where participants received a sticker and tattoo from our Year 6 House Captains. A great turn out despite the rainy weather.
ANZAC Day Celebrations
On Monday in Week 11, Allambie Heights PS held our ANZAC Service. Thank you to Mrs Parker for coordinating this wonderful service and congratulations to Joe for his moving rendition of the Last Post.
Grandparents' and Grandfriends' Day
Last term’s Grandparents' and Grandfriends’ Day was a tremendous success, filled with laughter, warmth and memorable moments between generations!
With a creative welcome for our special guests, hosted by our Year 6 leaders and incredible compere, Mrs Parker, students from Concert Band, Performance Band, Senior Choir, Allambie Singers and Recorder Ensemble performed for a record number of grandparents' and grandfriends'. There were also selected students from our Grandparents' and Grandfriends' Day portrait competition, proudly showcasing their wonderful work and honoring their special person.
This was followed by a fun filled picnic and inspiring classroom visits where students proudly shared their work and their learning.
This led to the amazing K-2 Easter Hat Parade with a special appearance by Allambie Bush Kindy.
Thank you to all of the grandparents' and grandfriends', students and school staff who contributed to making this day a memorable and special event. We look forward to celebrating this joyous occasion again next year!
Easter Hat Parade
In a joyful display of creativity and colour, students from Kindergarten to Year 2 and Allambie Bush Kindy took part in our annual Easter Hat Parade. Each class proudly showcased their colourful and creative Easter Hats, while families and classmates cheered them on and captured the moment. The event was filled with smiles, music, and festive cheer as families gathered to celebrate our students’ wonderful efforts. A warm thank you to all the parents, grandparents, and carers who joined us - it was a joy to have you there to share in this special afternoon.
Harmony Day
Harmony Day holds significant meaning as a celebration of cultural diversity and inclusivity within our school community. In honour of this important occasion, on Friday in Week 8, students donned a splash of orange, symbolizing unity and respect for one another's backgrounds. Throughout the week, teachers engaged students in various activities within the classroom, fostering an environment of appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures represented in our community.
Band Jam In
Band Jam In was held this past Saturday and what a truly wonderful event. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Band Committee and all the dedicated volunteers whose efforts made this occasion so memorable. I would also like to thank the school staff who came along to support the day. The event was exceptionally well-organised and highly engaging, providing a fantastic experience for everyone involved. A special thank you goes to Surrey for her outstanding commitment to our Band Program. One of the highlights of the day was the fun-filled activity of Nerf Wars, which added an element of excitement even amidst the wet weather. Such events not only enhance our school's spirit but also strengthen our community bonds. Thank you all for making it a success!
Celebrating our Students

Congratulations to our Senior Girls relay team who represented our school at the NSWPSSA Primary Athletics Championship in Week 1. It is an amazing achievement to reach this level, and we congratulate Megan, Isla, Sara, and Isobel for their wonderful effort and success.

Congratulations to Isla M for her impressive performance at the recent National Clubs Gymnastics Competition held on the Gold Coast at the end of last term. Competing at Level 7, Isla and her team achieved an outstanding third place overall in their division, ranking among 18 teams!
Isla’s dedication is truly remarkable, training 14 hours a week throughout the year to hone her skills and excel in this demanding sport. While gymnastics is not a school sport, we are proud to celebrate her fantastic achievement and commitment.
Well done, Isla! Keep reaching for the stars.
Coding
Congratulations to Zander R who recently competed in a statewide coding competition organised by an independent STEM education company called Stemlook. This is an extracurricular activity that Zandar does every Thursday evening in Chatswood.
The competition theme was Environmental Care. Students had to conceive, design and build a robot that helps the environment, program it using the Rogic software and create a short video case study to showcase their idea.
Zandar was awarded first place for his Planter Bot and presented with his certificate by Tanya Taylor the Mayor of Willoughby Council.
The robots of the top-winning students were also showcased at the Australian Museum for Science Week 2025.
Congratulations Zandar - what a huge achievement!
Sydney North Touch Football
Congratulations to Blythe and Claire, who recently competed for the Sydney North Touch Football team in Dubbo. Their team performed exceptionally well, playing over several days and winning the final against Hunter.
Blythe has played since she was 9 and plays for Manly. She also enjoys basketball, swimming, running and soccer. Her goal is to keep playing to enhance her skills and play with friends. She would like to continue achieving placement in representative teams and one day play for NSW.
Claire is also an exceptionally talented athlete and recently played for Sydney North in the netball competition at Coffs Harbour, where the team placed fourth. Claire has played netball for several years, representing Collaroy Plateau at club level and Manly at representative level. She excels in many sports, including soccer and athletics, and dedicates numerous hours each week to training and playing. Her goal is to one day play for the NSW Swifts netball team.
Sunny was also a member of the Sydney North Netball team, playing alongside Claire. Sunny has played netball since she was young and competes at both club and representative levels. She plays Goal Attack and Goal Shooter, with the aim of becoming the best shooter she can be. Sunny divides her time between touch football, netball and soccer, but netball is her favourite sport.
What amazing athletes we have here at Allambie Heights Public School!

Congratulations to Saskia L, who recently competed for the NSW Diving team at the National Aquatic Championships in Brisbane. She won a silver medal in the synchronised event, a bronze medal in team synchro, placed 5th in the Springboard knockout and 6th in Springboard.
Another highlight for Saskia during this event was when she was given the opportunity to commentate on some of the diving events.
Saskia currently dedicates 12 hours of training each week and is enrolled at the NSW Institute of Sport. She became interested in diving after participating in gymnastics for several years and was looking for a new sport to try. Her goal is to compete at the 2028 Olympic Games.
